Model Coherency is one of the themes of and for Social Role Valorization (SRV). Leadership level trainings in SRV and the SRV monograph by Wolfensberger explicitly teach about the construct of Model Coherency, albeit briefly. Model Coherency is built into the PASSING tool and the various ratings, though implicitly. The more complete exploration of Model Coherency is found in a posthumous publication by Wolfensberger, available from Valor Press.
Model Coherency can be applied as a service evaluation tool, either by itself or in combination with PASSING and/or elements of PASS. It can also be used to design or redesign a service model. Some knowledge of Model Coherency will be useful for anyone studying, teaching and applying SRV and PASSING. Study and knowledge of Model Coherency evaluation and Model Coherency design will be particularly fruitful for those in leadership positions. The construct can help us to have a holistic or ‘big picture’ perspective on a service model, for example.
I am still gaining knowledge of and experience with the tool, but so far, it seems that the Model Coherency construct can be ‘scaled’ so to speak; it can be used in full, with all the detailed steps of evaluation and/or design, as laid out in Wolfensberger’s three volume text. At the same time, it can be used at a more conceptual level, without going into great detail; for example, as part of an orientation for board members and program directors, as part of strategic planning for a program or organization, etc. [Of course, such ‘scaled’ use requires even greater knowledge of the Model Coherency tool, not less.] I encourage further reading and study of the ideas; some initial learning resources can be found at this website.
